From Jonah Goldberg:
Edmund Burke was right when he said, “Example is the school of mankind, and they will learn at no other.” What is happening in the Middle East is a horror. But some lessons can only be learned after exhausting the worse alternatives first.
There are a lot of people in the Obama administration who want us to in the middle of Syria’s civil war, including the prevaricator he just appointed as his National Security Advisor and the fanatical left-wing partisan (“Hillary is a monster”) who replaces her at the United Nations talking shop. The first is Susan Rice, who peddled the-video-caused-it falsehood to explain the Benghazi attack, bamboozling the low-information voters who put Obama in office for a second term. Absent that, his claim to have vanquished Al Queda would have been seen as the fantasy it was. Mitt Romney was just getting into this at one of the debates when interrupted by a large woman from the ABC unit of the state media. His general timidity kept him from pursuing the question then or later. Newt had his shortcomings, but fear of the media wasn’t one of them. He got it that they were the enemy and treated them accordingly. Back to Syria. Sheikh Yusuf Qaradawi, a very influential Sunni Egyptian cleric based in Qatar, has proclaimed the Shiite Hezbollah that is fighting for the Syrian regime “more infidel than Jews and Christians.” Wow. So what we have going on in the Middle East is another religious war. Given the promise of fracking and energy independence before long, why should we get involved in this dog fight?
