Whatever happened to old-fashioned reporting?

I have to ask if Sharyl Attkisson is the only honest journalist left in D.C. who does the old-fashioned kind of shoe-leather reporting that was once so common. You know, the kind where you don’t interview one another, take cues from JournoList-style organizations, and leave the office only for lunches with other news zombies. The knock-on-doors reporting is what I’m talking about. I used to be in the trade myself when reporters viewed government with suspicion and even antagonism. We knew they were hiding something and did our best to find out what it was. Today’s ranks have been thinned by remorseless capitalism and the need to produce clicks, which means never leaving your work station, but even beyond that the survivors seem to trust and even revere officialdom, and they seem to arrive from college with that mindset. Do those big student loans intimidate them, generating timidity and a spirit of acquiesence? You would think they had been brainwashed or something. Anyhow, back to Sharyl. She busted another big excloo about Benghazi today that will be ignored by the aforementioned wagon circlers:
